| MCD Reduces Carbon Emissions, Earns Credit |
With the Okhla compost plant coming into operation, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has successfully reduced carbon emissions, which has earned the civic body carbon credits worth Rs. 5 lakh. The Okhla compost plant was developed as part of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project, which also happens to be the first solid waste management project in the country. MCD has thus emerged as the first civic body in the country to have earned carbon credits.
The Okhla compost plant, which has been revived through a public-private partnership between the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and IL&FS, is capable of processing 200 mega tonnes of waste. Depending on the performance of the plant, MCD can earn carbon credits in the future too. |
